. The essence of our mission here at Maugham is best captured by these few words by early childhood educator, Carol Hillman:
“A positive learning climate in a school for young children is a composite of many things.   It is an attitude that respects children. It is a place where children receive guidance and encouragement from the responsible adults around them. It is an environment where children can experiment and try out new ideas without fear of failure. It is an atmosphere that builds children’s self-confidence as they dare to take risks. It is an environment that nurtures a love of learning.”
I hope you will consider this description as our promise to your children as they journey through their first years of school. A positive school climate sets the stage for student achievement. Maugham school embraces a philosophy that endorses the teaching of the social curriculum as an integral part of the school day. As a Responsive Classroom school, we use certain strategies to build school and classroom communities that create an environment for both academic productivity and joy in learning.
Maugham is a place that is filled with the hustle and bustle that goes along with a great elementary school. The best way to keep abreast of what is happening is to be involved. Education is a partnership between the home and the school. Parents are a child’s first teachers. You have established the rules, expectation and consequences. Through your actions you have taught your children how to interact with others, what you value and the importance of doing your best.   As we begin this school year, we renew our partnership. It takes supportive parents at home and those who volunteer in school to accomplish this task. Our Maugham HSA has been integral in helping provide a well rounded educational experience with all they do for our students.
We fully appreciate that students experience elementary school only once in their lifetimes and strive to make their journey as exciting, rewarding, and successful as possible. I look forward to a very successful and rewarding school year.
